LOCAL GOVERNMENT NEWS AND NOTICES
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH): Announced This Week That West Nile Virus (WNV) Has Been Detected In Mosquitoes Collected From Easton, Massachusetts
In 2019, 2132 mosquito samples were tested for WNV and 9 samples in the state were positive. The Town of Easton had two WNV positive mosquito samples identified on July 24, 2019. WNV is most commonly transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. The mosquitoes that carry this virus are common throughout the state, and are found in urban as well as more rural areas. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) announced on July 17, 2019 that Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) Virus has been detected in mosquitoes collected from Easton, Massachusetts. In 2018, 5,921 mosquito samples were tested for EEE virus, and two positive samples were identified in Massachusetts. EEE is a rare but serious illness spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. People over age 50 are most at risk to experience serious illness if they are infected with WNV. EEE can cause serious illness in any age group. Notice to Property Owners in Queset Sewer District
At this time the Queset Sewer District construction is substantially complete and ready for connections. Property owners in the Queset Sewer District that are part of the sewer project that would like to connect should contact a Licensed Drain Layer or contact a contractor who is eligible to become licensed to begin the process of connecting to sewer. The cost to connect to the sewer lines installed by the Town is the responsibility of the property owner. We recommend getting as many quotes as possible for the work and to be clear on what is or is not included in the scope of work (i.e. restoration of lawns, driveways, walkways, removal of trees, internal plumbing changes, abandonment of septic or cesspool, pumping of the old system, cost of permits, etc.). Only Licensed Drain Layers (or those applying to be licensed) may apply for a sewer permit. The Town of Easton will license contractors that have experience installing municipal sanitary sewer, possess the required insurance, and have posted a $5,000 performance bond. Five Corners Sewer Construction Project: Phase II
Phase II of the Five Corners Sewer Project includes installation of a sanitary sewer collection system from Roberts Drive along Route 106 down Foundry Street to the Five Corners area and will result in one-way traffic along Route 106 during most of the construction. The greatest amount of traffic is anticipated to occur during morning commuting hours. Now through September: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
Please be aware that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is conducting a national health study and Bristol County has been randomly selected as one of the survey locations. Starting July 19, 2019 through September 22, 2019, study personnel will be conducting a confidential phone survey of residents in Bristol County. The CDC has asked the Town of Easton to share this information so that residents are aware this is taking place, and should you receive a phone call and are willing to participate, “that this legitimate survey is a federally funded national effort with significant influence on health policy across the nation.” More information can be found at www.cdc.gov/nchs/nhanes.htm<http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nhanes.htm>.
Real Estate Exemption Applications for FY2020 Now Available
Applications for real estate property tax exemptions for FY2020 are now available through the Easton Assessors' Office. The town offers many exemptions designed to reduce property tax for qualifying seniors and disabled residents. Exemptions include: Elderly, for those age 65 and older who qualify by income and assets; widow, widower, persons over 70 or minor surviving child with asset limit; disabled veterans, blind, tax deferral and Community Preservation Act with income limits. Town of Easton Email

National Grid Pole Replacement
National Grid has started replacing poles and equipment along Center Street from Depot Street to Main Street. The project is expected to take between 4 and 6 weeks. Please be patient with the construction in this area for the foreseeable future.

The Public Health Nurse will be available for Blood Pressure readings for Easton residents on a walk in basis (no appointment needed) according to the following Tuesday schedule. Please note the Public Health nurse will be able to do blood pressure readings, not Blood Sugar.

Now through End of August: Fire Station #2 at 87 Depot Street - Under Construction - Closed
Fire Station #2 on Depot Street will be closed from May 6 through the end of August while construction happens, to add an addition and renovate the existing station. Fire Personnel and apparatus will be housed during the period of construction at Fire Station #3; on Bay road. Please remember to call 911 immediately in the event of an emergency.
Now through September 30: Phase II Water Restrictions in Place in Easton
Mandatory outside water restrictions are in place from May 1st to September 30th. This action is necessary to be in compliance with the Town's Water Management Act Permit. Phase II restricts water on an even/odd basis as follows:
·     Customers at even-numbered addresses will be restricted to allow lawn watering only on Monday and Thursday between the hours of 5:00 AM-8:00 AM and 6:00 PM-9:00 PM
·     Customers at odd-numbered addresses will be restricted to allow lawn watering only on Tuesday and Friday between the hours of 5:00 AM-8:00 AM and 6:00 PM-9:00 PM
Handheld hoses will be allowed anytime.

Easton Recreation Full Day Summer Program – Sessions Are Still Open – Register Now!
This program is for children ages 6-13 (14-15 for the Workreation Program). The program is held at the Easton Middle School. The new extended hours are 8:30am-4:00pm. There are 6 one-week sessions starting July 8th running through August 16th that include fun filled activities throughout the day. The Teen Genre Book Club will meet the 4th Saturday of each month from 11AM – 12PM, in the Teen Den at the Main Library. From 6-7PM. An animal handler and a presenter will provide a general introduction to the subject of animal ecology. We will explore topics such as traits used to classify different animals into groups like birds, reptiles, and mammals; types of interactions between animal groups; how animals interact with their environment; and much more! August 3: The Pieces of Our Planet.

From 11AM-12PM. During this Planet Discovery program from the Museum of American Bird Art, participants will begin to understand their role in the universe and in our environment. We will listen to a story about the science of planet Earth and examine some geological features of our world! This program will feature a digital microscope to look closely at the pieces of our planet. Participants will then get to create their own clay mosaic Earth using air dry clay and recycled materials. August 7: Purple Heart Day
The Town of Easton was proclaimed a Purple Heart Community in 2015. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. Please come out and support your Easton Purple Heart veterans. Light refreshments will be available following the ceremony.

August 14: Ames Free Library - Galaxy Paint Night Teen Program at the Queset House

Mark your calendar for just a FEW of the many teen programs at the Ames Free Library this summer. All will be held in Queset House. On Wednesday, August 14th at 3PM there will be a Galaxy Paint Night, and our teens get to use different materials to create your own galaxy painting in the style of Jackson Pollock!
